Heidi Hennink-Kaminski, Ph.D. is Dean of the College of Communication Arts and Sciences. She is a dynamic, energetic, and compassionate higher education leader with passion for lifelong learning. Adept at strategic planning and working with partners and stakeholders, she has a track record of developing, reinventing and iterating programs and initiatives. She leverages deep experience in researching needs/wants to uncover opportunities and is an expert in building consensus through gathering and presenting evidence, insights and information; inviting and listening to concerns; and connecting people and ideas. She recognizes challenges as opportunities and communicates to secure buy-in in service to an organization’s mission, anticipates and takes initiative, and builds community.

Hennink-Kaminski has more than a decade of academic administrative experience. Her research focuses on interdisciplinary health communication with an emphasis on the social marketing approach to promote healthy behaviors among individuals and communities. Her research has been funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health, the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the U.S. Department of Defense, and the Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation. She is a recipient of the David Brinkley Teaching Excellence Award and the Edward Vick Prize for Innovation in Teaching.

In her previous role as senior associate dean at UNC-Chapel Hill, she led initiatives that advanced academic culture, supported faculty growth and development, and ensured that educational programs were innovative and impactful. She served on various committees within the university, including the Administrative Board of the UNC Graduate School and its Academic Policy Committee as well as the Executive Vice Provost’s Senior Associate and Academic Dean’s Committee. Formerly, she served as interim dean and spent a decade as the associate dean for graduate studies at UNC-Chapel Hill, where she led new program development and curriculum change across a portfolio of six graduate programs.

Prior to joining academia, Hennink-Kaminski accumulated 15 years of corporate and agency professional experience including senior marketing communications roles. She is a Michigan native with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan, a master’s degree from Western Michigan University, and a doctorate in mass communication from the University of Georgia.

The Minor in Broadcast Journalism, which is administered by the School of Journalism, provides students a strong foundation for a career in broadcast journalism. Using cutting-edge technology, students will gain experience in audio and video storytelling, on-air performance and the production of high-end newscasts, replicating the real-world of visual media for television and other digital platforms. MSU’s School of Journalism is one of the few programs in the country that offers both radio and TV news and producing. You’ll learn the trade from our award-winning faculty who have worked in the industry.

Eligibility

The minor is available to students who are enrolled in the Journalism major at Michigan State University. With the approval of the department and college that administer the student’s degree program, the courses that are used to satisfy the minor may also be used to satisfy the requirements for the bachelor’s degree. To be considered for admission, a student must have been formally admitted to the Journalism major.

Application Process

Students who plan to apply to the program should complete an application and submit it to the School of Journalism. The application will be available beginning in the summer of 2018.

Program Requirements

Once accepted to the minor, you will meet with your Journalism advisor to plan future enrollment. With the approval of the Journalism department, courses that are used to satisfy the requirements for the minor may also be used to satisfy the requirements for the bachelor's degree.

The Minor in Sports Journalism provides students a strong foundation and marketable skills necessary to conceptualize, develop, research, interview, create and deliver traditional, multimedia, broadcast, and social media sports journalism content. Sports journalism content includes news issues, events, narrative and linear journalistic storytelling techniques, history, global sports and media relationships, social media, sports terminology, game play, rules, equipment and processes, and impact on society at all levels. Students will demonstrate critical thinking combined with journalistic frame working, enabling professional content, context and ethics across global media platforms and audiences.

Eligibility

The minor in Sports Journalism, which is administered by the School of Journalism, is available to students who are enrolled in the Journalism major at Michigan State University. With the approval of the department and college that administer the student’s degree program, the courses that are used to satisfy the minor may also be used to satisfy the requirements for the bachelor’s degree.

Students interested in a journalism study abroad experience may contact the advisor for the minor. The study abroad experience is a 6 credit experience taken under a special section of JRN 492.

We invite you to join an exciting interdisciplinary field of study at the intersection of the social sciences, humanities, and technology. We develop and apply transformative knowledge about all media systems, society and evolving information and communication technologies. This STEM designated program (09.0702 Digital Communication and Media/Multimedia) engages students to become leaders in academia, government, and industry in the media and information fields.

Our approach is multidisciplinary, combining faculty members with degrees in communication, advertising, public relations, journalism, economics, information studies, sociology, law, marketing and computer science, all pursuing teaching and research opportunities in three participating departments.

QS World University rankings place MSU 13th in the world and 8th in the U.S. in communication and media studies. The National Communication Association (NCA), in their most recent doctoral program reputation study, ranked MSU’s Ph.D. programs as No. 1 in educating researchers in communication technology, and in the top four in mass communication. Michigan State University ranked third in frequency of faculty publication in communication in a study reported in The Electronic Journal of Communication in 2012.

Cutting Edge Basic and Clinical Science

This program is designed to equip students with the experiences, knowledge and skills they need to support their future scientific endeavors. Students not only complete coursework in their subject areas, but also in supporting areas such as research ethics, statistics, cognitive science, linguistics, instrumentation, programming and signal processing. Students are also trained in publishing and in how to secure external funding for their work.

The doctoral program in CSD is designed to train students in these skills through program components such as:

Completing a grant writing course that will result in actual grant submission.
Completing and presenting/publishing the data from a research project and exposure to multiple research labs through lab rotations designed to establish and cultivate professional collaborations.
Recognizing that teaching is an integral part of academic life, the program also requires doctoral students to be involved in teaching in a variety of settings such as delivering guest lectures and having independent responsibility for a course.

A Ph.D. in speech, language or hearing sciences and their affiliated fields can open the doors for fulfilling careers in academic, medical, industrial and educational settings.

The Ph.D. program in CSD offers students exciting opportunities to learn from and work with internationally renowned scientists in the fields of communicative sciences and disorders. Our doctoral program is designed to attract excellent students from diverse backgrounds and train them to become scientists and leaders in the fields of speech, language and hearing sciences and their affiliated areas.

Students at MSU are able to use the resources of a world leader in research with nationally ranked academic units, impressive libraries, a beautiful large campus, a pioneering record in sustainability, exciting athletics, and an impressively diverse academic community. Becoming a Spartan is to gain entry into one of the largest and most productive groups of alumni networks in the world.

The CSD department strives to provide funding in the form of assistantships and tuition waivers to students enrolled in its doctoral program. The current stipend rates are competitive with other top programs in the country and are based on the levels recommended by the National Institutes of Health. The tuition waiver covers 9 credits during the regular semester and 5 during the summer.

In the 2004 NCA reputation survey of "effectiveness of Ph.D. program", MSU ranked #1 in health communication, #1 in communication and technology, #2 in mass communication, #4 in interpersonal and small group communication, and #4 in international and intercultural communication. MSU had the top average rating score among the subset of comprehensive doctoral programs with at least five specialties.

Research

During their four years in the program, students work closely with faculty members and other graduate students on ongoing collaborative research projects where they gain skills in collaborating with others, experience working with a research team and securing funding for new research. Students learn how to generate independent hypotheses and research designs, the critical importance of real-world relevancy in keeping with the land-grant tradition and the art of working together with others in teams for common objectives.

The minimal required courses allow you maximum flexibility to design your own curriculum in consultation with your faculty advisor. You may choose from courses inside and outside of communication to obtain the necessary 30 credit hours to graduate.

All students take two required courses: Communication Theory and Introduction to Quantitative Research Methods. Additionally, pre-Ph.D. track students take an applied statistics course and master’s thesis credit hours.

Choose Your Track

Both tracks in the M.A. Communication program are designed to assist you in improving your ability to:

Identify key communication variables affecting a person's performance, either in an organization where you have worked or one in which you expect to work after completing this program.
Develop communication strategies for coping with specific communication problems, which may exist in your current or future job.
Identify communication variables, which influence the relationship between your organization and the larger community.
Demonstrate an ability to apply information from coursework to the development of communication strategies.
Synthesize results from research on any question.

Pre-Ph.D.

The pre-Ph.D. track is designed to prepare you to compete for entry into a Ph.D. program in Communication.

Career Oriented

The career oriented M.A. track is better suited for you (a) if you would like to improve your ability to communicate and/or (b) if your ability to develop and implement appropriate communication strategies is critical to your professional performance.

Students in both tracks learn quantitative research methods to approach their understanding of communication as social-scientific scholars.

Many students in the career-oriented M.A. Communication track have an interest in philanthropy and nonprofit work. These students may add to their degree a specialization in nonprofit fundraising, which requires a practicum experience in a nonprofit organization.
