Two leading scholars will share their research at the inaugural “Celebrating Excellence in Communication Scholarship” event on June 4th. The event features invited talks by Shardé M. Davis, Ph.D., an interpersonal communication scholar betboom dacha dubaiand founder of the #BlackintheIvory movement, and Dana Mastro, Ph.D., whose research examines media effects related to racial/ethnic stereotyping.
"Celebrating Excellence” is hosted by ComArtSci’s Department of Communication, with funding from the MSU Graduate School. The event is free and open to the public. Advanced registration is required.

Dr. Shardé M. Davis
Known as the visionary behind the hashtag and the movement #BlackintheIvory, Dr. Davis is Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Connecticut. She also serves as a faculty affiliate of the Africana Studies Institute and the Institute for Collaboration on Health, Intervention, and Policy. Dr. Davis is an interpersonal communication scholar with a focus on racial and gender identity, resistance and resilience, intergroup dynamics, and supportive communication. Focused on lifting up Black academics, she has published more than 40 peer-reviewed articles and invited book chapters, and has been recognized with awards, honors and fellowships for her scholarship.

Dr. Dana Mastro
A Spartan alumna with betboom teama Ph.D. in Communication from MSU, Dr. Mastro is Professor of Communication at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her work documents the ways racial and ethnic groups are depicted across media platforms and explores the impact of stereotypical representations on audience perceptions, emotions, and behavior. Dr. Mastro has received multiple awards for her research and was recently recognized with a Distinguished University Teaching Award. She is a Fellow of the International Communication Association.
