Bio

Dr. Marisa A. Smith is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Advertising + Public Relations and the School of Journalism.Her betboom investigates information in digital environments and examines the sociopolitical influence of these messages. A critical component for understanding the effects of digital information environments on democracy is the consideration of how identity is leveraged within political information. Through investigating the effects of political information, including disinformation, she examines the influence of race, identity, and politics on public policy support, political polarization, civic engagement, and political opinion. Her work has been published inMass betboom & Society,New Media & Society, andSocial Media + Society.
