Dr. Mengyan Ma is an Assistant Professor (Professor of Practice) in the Department of Advertising and Public Relations. Before rejoining betboom dachaMichigan State University (MSU), she was an Assistant betboom teamProfessor in the Department of Communication and Journalism at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (UWEC). Mengyan has been teaching undergraduate courses in different formats (e.g., in-person, synchronous and asynchronous) since 2015. Previous classes include Social Media and Communication, Advertising Message Strategy, Research Methods, Writing for Integrated Strategic Communication, Media Law and Ethics, Media Planning, Digital Analytics, and Account Planning and Research.
RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
Mengyan is a quantitative and qualitative researcher. Her research projects include but are not limited to uncovering what works for sales marketing/advertising, understanding the effects of emerging technology use, and investigating how family communication relates to psychological and physical health. Collaborating with the Media and Advertising Psychology (MAP) lab, she has examined the psychological effects and processes associated with using social media. Collaborating with the Family Communication and Relationships (FCR) Lab, she conducts and disseminates cutting-edge family communication research that explores family disruptions and processes that can make a difference in the everyday lives of families. Her research has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as Social Media + Society, Health Communication, Western Communication Journal, and the Journal of IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing. Her co-authored paper, titled “A Tale of Four Platforms: Motivations and Uses of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat among College Students,” has been cited over 1,300 times. Mengyan is also interested in user experience (UX) research. She has earned a Google UX Design certificate by completing 7 courses and two large projects within 6 months.
INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE
Mengyan was a Marketing Manager of A Plus International Culture Communication Inc., responsible for managing relationships and seeking collaboration opportunities with local organizations to develop international cultural exchange programs and teacher training programs. She has worked as a writing counselor, marketing analyst, and advertising designer for different organizations. Before coming to the U.S., she interned at Beijing Media Network betboom teamas a journalist and program designer for many years.
EDUCATION BACKGROUND
She received her Ph.D. in Media and Information Studies program with a Graduate Certificate in Community Engagement from MSU in 2021. She earned her master’s degree in advertising with an Advertising Ethics Certification from MSU in 2015. She got her bachelor’s degree in finance from Wuhan University (China) in 2013.
Mengyan is a researcher and an educator. She is a big believer of bridging the gap between education and practice.
